By India Today Education Desk: In recent years, the global education industry has witnessed a remarkable surge in dynamism, with studying abroad once again flourishing after the disruption caused by the pandemic. Indian students, in particular, have embraced this trend, propelled by the availability of excellent higher educational opportunities and a multitude of graduate route alternatives.

Post-pandemic, there has been a notable increase in the number of Indian students venturing overseas for education. According to a report, in 2022 alone, nearly 7.5 lakh Indians pursued their studies abroad, marking a sharp rise from 4.5 lakhs in 2017 and 2.6 lakhs in 2020.

Moreover, this surge is not limited to metropolitan cities alone; Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India are witnessing a growing trend of students aspiring to pursue higher education abroad.

However, it is important to recognise that the educational opportunities chosen by students differ based on their geographical locations and specific preferences, with factors such as rankings, cost, and internship opportunities all playing a role in decision-making.

In Tier One cities, factors such as rankings, location, and scholarships sway students' decisions. Southern cities place a higher value on reputation and rankings, while Western cities prioritise affordability, peer recommendations, and the presence of a sizable Indian population.

The top three factors that students should take into account while choosing study choices are programme content, availability of scholarships, and programme cost.

Let's delve deeper into these pivotal factors shared by Diwakar Chandiok, Vice President (Recruitment) for South Asia, INTO University Partnerships.

1. PROGRAMME CONTENT

The range of courses available while studying abroad is expansive, with options that offer research opportunities and skill-based training.

Students' educational requirements and interests must be prioritised when choosing a university. Programme content is crucial, as it directly impacts students' future employment prospects.

While institutional reputation is important, it should not overshadow the alignment of the program with the student's career goals.

2. AVAILABILITY OF SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships play a vital role in strengthening academic and professional goals by removing financial barriers.

They have made studying abroad more accessible and feasible for students. At the undergraduate level, universities can offer scholarships ranging from USD 5,000 to USD 40,000.

3. PROGRAMME COST

The cost of higher education is a significant concern for students considering studying abroad. Tuition costs vary significantly among institutions, while living expenses, travel, and insurance costs differ between countries and locations.

While studying abroad offers numerous advantages, students must ensure that they explore options that align with their budgets for a positive and successful overseas experience.

When selecting a programme overseas, additional factors also play a significant role. Students consider the prospects accessible in the country after completing their education as well as the ranking of the university they are interested in attending.

Peer groups can also have an impact on a student's decision about a university.
