Delhi University (DU) is set to restore its disrupted academic calendar as classes for undergraduate programmes are slated to commence on August 16 after a three-year hiatus. University officials have confirmed that the first students' union election since 2020 will also take place, with expectations for the poll to be held in September or October. The Covid-19 pandemic initially caused disruptions, leading to irregularities in semesters and schedules. However, this year, officials assured a more coordinated academic calendar for students.

"The new academic session of Delhi University is scheduled to begin from August 16," announced a DU spokesperson. Admissions are currently underway, with the first round of seat allocation closing on Monday. The university offers 71,000 seats across 78 undergraduate programs and 198 combinations of BA programmes across its 68 colleges.

NEW COURSES AND PROGRAMMES

The pandemic's impact on mental health and learning prompted calls for a one-month mandatory break, and the adoption of a more organised academic calendar is seen as a positive step. New courses, including three BTech programmes and a five-year LLB, will be introduced this year. Each of the 360 students enrolled in the BTech programmes will receive up to Rs 50,000 reimbursement for laptop purchases.

Additionally, the new academic session will feature programmes such as the five-year LLB and the integrated teacher education programme (ITEP).

The option for students to choose between three-year and four-year programmes is now available.

UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK 2022

Studies will follow the modified syllabus based on the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022 implemented from the academic session of 2022-23. While controversies surround curriculum changes, including the removal of a chapter on Pakistan's national poet Muhammad Iqbal from the political science syllabus, the university aims to uphold academic standards.

Furthermore, DU's College of Arts will include admissions in BA fine arts through the common seat allocation system (CSAS) this year. Notably, a supernumerary quota for orphan students has been incorporated. "The University of Delhi and its affiliated colleges will admit two candidates (one male and one female) under this quota in each programme at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels," confirmed the official.
