On August 4, a video showing Afreen's father and brother mercilessly beating her went viral on social media. The girl was taking a stroll at a local market with a young man when her father, Niyamat Ullah, and brother Haider Ali caught her and beat her up in public.

According to the police, some locals recorded the video and informed the cops about it, prompting them to launch an investigation into the matter.

The girl was reluctant to go home with her family members but agreed after police intervened. According to the villagers, the family beat Afreen up mercilessly after reaching home, resulting in her death, police told news agency PTI.

The police said it was a case of honour killing and legal action was being taken.

A case has been registered against the father and brother of the victim under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

"A video went viral on Twitter and police have launched an investigation. It came to the fore that the minor was buried in haste," a senior police official told India Today.
