Video: Trunkless elephant calf stumps forest officers in Kerala

In a surprising discovery, forest officials stationed in the dense forests of Athirappilly reported sighting an elephant calf without a trunk. The officials, who were monitoring a herd of elephants known to traverse between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, were taken aback by the unusual sight.

The health and movement of the elephants were under close observation when the calf was spotted. An official from the team shared that while there have been instances of fully grown elephants with partially severed trunks due to crocodile attacks or damage from metal wires, this is the first recorded case of a calf surviving without a trunk.

The absence of a trunk, which is crucial for elephants to eat, drink, and socialise, raises concerns about the calf's survival. However, the forest official assured that the calf appeared healthy for its age. He further added that the need to relocate the calf to an elephant camp would be determined after further observation. As of now, there doesn't seem to be any immediate necessity to move the calf.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will continue to conduct a survey at the Gyanvapi premises to determine if the mosque was built upon a temple, the Allahabad High Court ruled today, saying it is "in the interest of justice". The High Court dismissed the Muslim side's petition against a Varanasi court order that had directed the ASI to conduct a scientific survey in the mosque premises last month.
